Ajay Pillarisetti, a doctoral student in the UC Berkeley School of Public Health’s division of Environmental Health Sciences, won this year's M. Donald Whorton Award for his paper, “Patterns of Stove Usage after Introduction of an Advanced Cookstove: The Long-Term Application of Household Sensors.”

Published in the prestigious journal, Environmental Science and Technology, the paper outlines the long-term deployment of low-cost, data-logging temperature sensors as stove use monitors to track the use of a biomass-fueled fan-assisted stove in rural Haryana, India.

Pillarisetti’s work focuses on developing measurement methods for a variety of parameters related to exposure to household air pollution, including the use of commercial devices to measure appliance use with the aim of developing a next generation PM2.5monitor for HAP assessments.
