The appointment of Julia Buss RN, PhD, as the new deputy director of COEH was announced by Director John Balmes. She replaces retiring deputy director Patricia Quinlan. Buss, who obtained her PhD in Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing in 2015 from UCSF, spent much of her career with the American Heart Association (AHA). In her last position with the AHA, she was the regional director of Quality Improvement Initiatives.

Her research interests include the effects of shift work, long work hours, and stress on health, obesity, health behaviors, and safety at work. In 2010 she published, Your Care Plan: A nurse's Guide to Healthy Living, to help nurses prioritize their own health along with their patient’s health. An independent film-maker, she also wrote and directed the environmentally focused documentary film, The Root Cause.

Buss, who guest lectured at UCSF and San Francisco State University, is a member of the Obesity Society and the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses.
