COEH Student Project Award: Selected Student Comments

From... Assessment of Cement Dust Concentrations and Noise Levels in a Cement Project in Nicaragua (March 2005)

COEH: Were the reviewers’ comments helpful?
Student: Yes, they were very helpful and our team was grateful…their comments made us think more critically about our project’s design.

COEH: What would you say to an incoming student about applying for this funding?
Student: …it was a GREAT experience…we were able to make a difference. We would apply again!

COEH: What plans, if any, do you have for presenting the results of your project?
Student: Presentation to the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health and the Cement Plant.

From.. Public Health Impacts of the Three Gorges Dam (March 2005)

COEH: What obstacles, if any, did you encounter in accomplishing your goals?
Student:
As our project was conducted in China, we worked hard to find local collaborators. This was extremely important in making sure that our presence was legitimate and not resented. However, given the highly sensitive controversy surrounding the Three Gorges Dam, it did prove to be a challenge.

COEH: What would you say to an incoming student about applying for this funding?

Student: I would remind them that $5000 can go a long way if you are creative and budget carefully.

COEH: Did this funding enable you to do something that would not have been possible without it?
Student: Yes, as we were starting a fresh project with no supporting data or direct involvement, it would have been difficult to obtain sufficient funds to pilot our ideas. Now that we have baseline data, we are more competitive in soliciting funds.
