About the webinar:

This presentation will explore some of the machine learning and natural language processing approaches for analyzing noisy injury narratives collected from hospital emergency rooms and for identifying emerging product injuries from online data sources. Learners will also discuss how vision-based machine learning systems can be used for detection of personal protective equipment (PPE) compliance for safety glasses.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Review how different machine learning models perform in classifying noisy injury narratives

  • Discuss how machine learning can be used for decision support in injury surveillance while utilizing human expert knowledge

  • Describe how vision-based AI systems can be used to advance safety and ergonomics in occupational settings

Speaker: Guarav Nanda, PhD

Dr. Gaurav Nanda is an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering Technology at Purdue University with focus in Industrial Engineering Technology. He works on research problems involving applied machine learning, text mining, and intelligent decision support with applications in safety, smart manufacturing, and STEM education.

About the Northern California Education and Research Center

The goal of the Northern California ERC, a consortium of programs at the University of California’s Center of Occupational and Environmental Health, is to train professionals as practitioner and research leaders in occupational safety and health by offering graduate degrees, residency training, clinical experiences, and research mentorship to trainees. The aim of the ERC is to provide a broad, multidisciplinary educational experience involving student and faculty collaborations in the classroom, laboratory, and field.  Through academic training, research, and community service projects, our faculty and trainees address ongoing and emerging challenges facing US Workers.  Activities are grounded in multi-campus, interactive teaching programs that translate knowledge into information that can be used to improve worker safety and health.
